Foulplay Games is a women-owned creative business based in Seattle, WA! We write murder mystery games for geeks! Learn more about us at https://foulplayco.com
Approximately two to three hours depending on the size of your game!
Can I play online or in-person?
Yes! All of our games include instructions and materials for either playing with friends in-person or hosting online! We specifically include instructions for Zoom, Discord, and Gather Town.
The simple answer is, yes! We don’t think it’s fair for the person who put the most effort into planning the party to miss out on all the fun! We design all of our games so the host can fully participate in the story. They can even keep the murderer's identity a secret from themselves if they choose.
We include a Host Guide in each game detailing everything you need to know to set up and host the game from start to finish! This guide will go into the specifics of assigning characters, preparing game materials, a party run-of-show, and a few optional extras that can enhance the game experience.
Our games are unscripted, meaning players receive a character, a personality, secrets, and a list of clues, but can decide how and when they reveal this information! Before the game, players receive a character profile with a backstory, personality traits, and various goals to accomplish. Once the game begins, guests "act" as their character, interacting with others, moving through scenarios, while investigating, bribing, or blackmailing other characters. Then, spoiler alert, a murder takes place! After that, players receive their Goals and Objectives for the rest of the game. The murderer knows they are the killer and is trying to cover their tracks while the other players are trying to figure out whodunnit!
Our unscripted games allow players to play their own way and dive into their roles while receiving enough information, plot points, and clues to point them in the right direction. We have plenty of roles for the extrovert and the wallflower alike! Our games are primarily gender-neutral, giving added flexibility for the players and the host!
It depends on the game! All of our games offer a minimum and a maximum number of characters needed for game play. We recommend finding a game that you feel you can fill up to the maximum number of players. Remember to include the host in the count as well! Right now, our games run from 6-24 characters.
We include content warnings for each of our games to identify sensitive content that hosts and players may wish to avoid for various reasons.
We can promise you WILL NEVER find the following in our games:
Assault/Abuse
Gory descriptions or shocking images
Transphobia
Homophobia or closeted characters
References to body type or apperance
You WILL find:
Engaging stories
Dynamic characters
Interesting settings
Interwoven plots
Freeform playing
No scripts
Inclusive language
Gender-neutral Characters
Gender-neutral characters are characters who do not have a specific gender or pronouns within the game. For gender-neutral characters, the player chooses their character's pronouns, whether he/him, she/her, they/them, or any other pronouns. This format is more inclusive for gender non-conforming folx, plus it gives our games flexibility so hosts do not need to worry about gathering a precise group of people to fill gender-specific characters for the game to work.
As a general rule, our games are only suitable for older teens and adults. We do have one mystery game for kids 9-13 years old but most are for teens and adults.
